Vienna is the ideal city to explore via bicycle!Vienna has 800km-long network of cycle paths. Vienna lies on the Danube and on the Passau-Hainburg Danube Cycle Path which annually brings thousand of cycling enthusiasts to the old Emperor's city. They all enjoy discovering Vienna's attractions by bicycle. Those bike routes in Vienna’s car-free green areas (e.g. the Prater and Lobau) are especially well-suited for families.
Bicycles will get you from A to B quicker than anything else in the city. They have many advantages over cars. Environmentally friendly (no exhaust fumes, no noise) they are a good way of keeping fit as well. They require little space so traffic jams are never a problem. No need to look out for parking space either.
All this has made the City of Vienna decide to raise the share of bicycles in overall traffic to eight percent. A bicycle-friendly atmosphere is to help make bicycles an everyday means of transport.
By 2010 the bicycle path network is to be completed. The main network will then be more than 800 kilometres long.
Bicycles are allowed on the underground from 9a.m. to 3p.m. and after 6p.m. on weekdays, and all day Saturday and Sunday. Half-price tickets at 0.80 Euro each are required for transportation
The new "City Bikes
Wien" introduced in 2003 are among the most modern free city bike systems
worldwide. There are several bike terminals throughout the city. To use a City
Bike you need a Bankomat (cashpoint) card or a Citybike-Card. The first hour is
free with prices rising progressively from there on (minimum two Euro from the
second hour). All terminals are equipped with touch screens, which also give
access to Vienna’s internet pages. By 2006 there should by a city-wide supply of
City Bikes.
Adventurous bikers really get their fill in the Vienna Woods,
Vienna’s biggest recreational area close by. There is a total of eight
signposted mountain bike routes for average and advanced bikers which can be
accessed at twelve different points. The routes are between ten and 42
kilometres long.
An additional signposted bike route through the woods is soon to
be opened in Floridsdorf at the foot of Bisamberg.

Right-of-way
Bikers have right of way on all lines of roads reserved for them, such as
cycle paths, combined pedestrian and cycle paths, cycle lanes and multi-purpose
lanes, street crossings for cyclists. They must yield their right of way once
they leave the above lines of roads.
Zebra crossings
* Cyclists must not endanger pedestrians when using a zebra crossing.
* Pedestrians have right of way on zebra crossings.
Street crossings for cyclists
* There is a speed limit of ten kilometers per hour for cyclists on
crossings not controlled by traffic lights or manual signals
* Trams and service cars on duty approaching the cycle crossing have
right of way.
Cycling against a one-way street
Cyclists may ride against a one-way street where this is indicated by the
apposite traffic sign; they may generally do so in residential areas.
Children
To carry a child on the back of your bicycle you must have completed 16 years
of age. Children under eight require a bicycle seat suited to their size.
Bicycle seats may only be used if spokes are properly covered. Seats must be
fastened behind the cyclist’s seat. Only one child may be carried at a time.
Children below twelve years of age must be accompanied by a person in charge
(minimum 16 years of age). This does not apply to children ten years and up
if:
* they have passed a cycle test and
* have a bicycle licence to prove it
