1. Cafe and restaurant prices are high around the Schwedenplatz, the Stephensplatz and the Hofburg; walk on a few streets to find cheaper options.

2. In a hurry? Look for a take-away stand (called Wurstelstand) where you can buy a Wurst (hot dog) in a roll with mustard and the 'Anker' bakery chain shops that sell rolls, pastries and coffee.

3. If you're on a tight budget consider one of the city's university canteens or Mensen open to the general public. The food is good decent Viennese fare, usually lots of pork dishes, and you can get a couple of courses for around 4Euro.
